Question : Hi, I’m living alone in the city and recently broke up with my boyfriend, who I thought I would end up marrying. Now, his friends refuse to hang out with me and I find myself spending most of my time alone. It was only a few days back, after I decided to start becoming active on social media that I realized that my former boyfriend had moved on and found love elsewhere, while here I was, still crying for him. I want to focus on my academics and my career. but deep down I’m still hurt and even tried to commit suicide a few days back. Please help!!! Teentalker , 18-year-old

Dear Teentalker,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns.

When you decide to spend your life with someone and finds that the relationship ends due to lack of compatability, this can be really painful. To top it all, you’re feeling lonely right now, since there’s no one you can share your problems with. This can be even more frustrating since you’re still recovering from the pain of a breakup, while you’re former boyfriend appears to have moved on.  Remember, however, that, every individual is different and has different ways of dealing with loss and pain.

In order to help you get through this difficult phase, here are a few things I would recommend:

  • Talk to your school/college counsellor about the situation. You can also try calling up the suicide helplines by looking up the yellow pages under ‘reach out’ section on the teentalk website.
  • Shift your focus. Utilize this ‘me-time’ to get to know yourself better. Write down ’25 things I love about myself’. This might seem a little difficult at first, but with the passage of time, putting down your strengths will become relatively easier.
  • Joining a support group for teenagers facing challenges will allow you to share your innermost thoughts in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
  • Take a break from your routine and spend some time with your parents and the rest of the family if you wish to. You might also wish to consider taking a short vacation with your family!

Hope this helps, if you have any other query do connect online for chat between 11am-8pm or drop us an offline message.

Regards,
