Question : I was in a relationship but as asked by my parents I broken up with him. Nowadays, my parents always suspect me. They still think that I try to attract boys because I cannot live without them. What should I do?

Dear Teentalker,

Thank you for reaching out to us time and again and most importantly, for sharing your concerns.

It is nice to know that things on the relationship front with your former boyfriend have been dealt with, but in the process, that has created a great deal of tension between you and your parents.

It is good to know that you’re able to balance your academics along with other areas of your life and that you’ve managed to do well on different fronts.

So, here are a few suggestions, I would like to put across in order to help you get through this phase:

1. Assure your parents that you are serious about your future and that you’re willing to seek their guidance as and when required. To know more about how your parents can help you in the process, please read the article on ‘How parents can help their kids to reach academic goals’ by clicking on the following link:

2. Your parents grew up being exposed to a different version of India and the society at large as compared to what you see in your surroundings. Since, the past couple of decades, India has changed a great deal in terms of culture, values and so on, but sometimes people belonging to older generations might struggle to keep up with the change. To know more, about how to deal with strict parents, please read the following article:

Rebuilding that trust with your parents might take some time, but at this stage it is important for you to be patient and focus on staying positive and believing that things will work out for the better.

Despite, putting in all efforts, if you find that things are not working out, then it’s best to stay positive by focusing on your short-term and long-term career related goals. To get started on that front, please explore career guidance by clicking on the following link:

Hope this helps! If you need further clarifications, please feel free to write back or you can chat with the Teentalk Experts from Mondays to Saturdays:11am -8pm.

Regrads,
