Dear Teentalker,
I’m so sorry you are hurting that bad. I can imagine how difficult this must be for you. Let’s explore your anxiety and help you deal with this emotional state more effectively so you can cope better. Here are a few active ways to deal with this:
- You can use methods to divert your mind by using diversion tips
- You can employ the coping techniques to help you make healthier choices
Here’s how you do this. Sometimes we feel that harming ourselves will make us feel better about ourselves and our situation since it feels like a release but you must know there are better ways to deal with it.Hurting yourself is often accompanied by feelings of guilt and low self-image – which are additional feelings you must deal with.
Here are a couple of things you can try to keep that urge under check.
- Try to identify your triggers and keep a journal. Make a note of what you were doing, how you were feeling and your thoughts just before the urge to cut yourself. This will help you recognize a pattern.
- Distracting yourself when you have self harming thoughts :
- Going for a walk or exercise
- Listening to music
- Squeezing a stress ball/clay or play dough
- Talking to someone about it
- Writing/drawing/painting
- Relaxation Techniques
The above are a few ways to help yourself. Is there anything on that list that could help you? Do you have some of your own?The listed self-help techniques however are short term. In order to find a long term solution and to develop healthier coping techniques, it’s important you seek support from someone who makes you feel accepted. It could be a trusted teacher, counsellor or a relative. A trained therapist can work with you and get to the root of what is makingyou cut yourself. Just remember, you are stronger and you can overcome this inner turmoil by rebuilding your strength. There are 24/7 helplines available with trained therapists who keep all your information confidential.
When you feel emotionally fragile look for the right resources and find healthier ways to deal with it. With a little help and meditation you will realize that you have emerged stronger from it all. Reach out for help and you will see light at the end of the tunnel.
