I’m a girl but I feel like a boy. I don’t know what to do!

Question: Since I was a kid I always felt different from my friends. I’m a girl but I feel more like a boy – the things I enjoy like sports, the way I dress, and even when I was a kid and my friends and I used to play “house house” I always played the role of the father or brother… all my friends have started waxing their body and facial hair, but I want it to grow and I even have a secret stash of photos of celebrity men who I want to look like. This isn’t normal behavior. What do I do? Teentalker , 14-year-old

Dear Teentalker,

It sounds like you’ve been trying to work out your gender identity on your own, which can be confusing and could make you feel “abnormal” – like you’re the only one who feels this way. But you’d be surprised to hear how common these feelings are amongst teenagers and adults, and I think you’ve been very brave and self-aware to confront it! Just because it isn’t talked about a lot in the mainstream media doesn’t make it less normal or common.
