Dear Teentalker, Thanks for reaching out and sharing your concern.
Having feelings for someone or liking someone is natural. In fact, it is natural to get attracted to someone even if you didn’t meet him or talk to him personally. It is always important to recognize your feelings be it positive or negative.
Before you can change how you feel, you need to acknowledge what you're experiencing right now. Are you experiencing guilt? Are you feeling sad? Try to give a name to your emotions. Labeling how you feel can give you relief. It can also help you make the right decision if you are aware of your feelings.
You can jot down your thoughts and reframe them to develop a more realistic view.
Another thing that will help you gain a different perspective for your issues is to think and ask yourself, “what suggestion will you give to your friend if she is experiencing a similar situation?”
If you are unsure about how that guy feels about you and whether the feeling is mutual or not, then you can confess your feelings for him but at the same time be prepared for a positive as well as a negative response. You can also assure him that whatever his response is, that won’t change your friendship. It might take some time to prepare yourself to say this but you will be clear about your relationship with that person in your mind and plan your further steps accordingly.
Managing your emotions is tough at times. But the more time and attention you spend on acknowledging and regulating your emotions, the more mentally stronger you'll become. You'll gain confidence in your ability to handle discomfort while also knowing that you can make healthy choices that shift your mood.
Hope this helps! If you need further clarifications, please feel free to write back or you can chat with the Teentalk Experts from Mondays to Saturdays : 9 am to 7 pm.
