Dear Teentalker,
Thank you for talking about this as I understand lot of teenagers find it difficult or embarrassing to bring this topic up.
A few pointers on what you will explore:
- What a ‘wet dream’ or ‘night fall’ really is!
- Knowledge about it will help you understand this natural process as described below
‘Wet dreams’ during adolescence is a natural part of development that means that your body producing the male hormone- testosterone, and can release sperm. This also means that when you decide to have a baby someday, your sperm can fertilize an egg and you can get a girl pregnant. They are also known as ‘nocturnal emissions’ or ‘night falls.’ In simple terms, it is a ‘release’. A semen build up leads to ejaculation. If this happens, you can feel stickiness in boxers. As common as it is, not everyone gets wet dreams and there’s absolutely nothing wrong in that. I’m sure that’s a relief to hear.
During puberty it’s a normal process to be curious about our bodies and that could lead to self-exploration which could lead to masturbation that is the stimulation of one’s own genitals for sexual pleasure. This is a normal and healthy activity as long as it is not excessive and interfering in your everyday life. Another important factor to keep in mind is that this is a private act and preoccupation with and/or inappropriate masturbation practices, for example, touching yourself in public or any inappropriate place or flashing your privates (penis) could be a sign for underlying concerns which need to be addressed.
Now that some light has been thrown on this topic, hope some of your fears and questions have been addressed, and you feel more confident, and become part of conversations with your friends.
