Dear Teentalker,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns.
Getting your first period is surely a memorable and a significant event in your life. It is one of the most prominent phases of puberty and signals the possibility of fertility and the ability to get pregnant after having sexual intercourse.
The first period that a girl gets is usually referred to as 'menarche' and it often comes suddenly, without warning and involves bleeding.
Your body is likely to undergo significant changes once you get your first period and that you will continue to get your monthly cycle which, if regular, is expected to last for 4 days, on an average. This monthly cycle is likely to continue through all of your adulthood, until you reach the next phase of your life which is 'menopause'.
Once you get your period, it is important for you to start following menstrual hygiene and use sanitary pads. To know more about self-care, please work on the following tools: Self-Care and Your Period Diary by exploring the Puberty tab.
