Dear Teentalker,
Thank you for sharing your concern with us. I can only imaing the distress you must be feeling due to this condition.
Cancer can be a very stressful life altering change. Waiting for a diagnosis, hearing that you have cancer, coping with treatment and side effects, being anxious about work and finances, and worrying about what the future holds can add up to a large amount of emotional and physical distress.
Cancer can change the way you look, temporarily or permanently. Some people gain or lose weight. Chemotherapy can sometimes make your hair fall out. You may have had surgery to remove a part of your body, and you may have scars. Changes in the way you look can be difficult for you and your loved ones. It takes time to grieve the loss of your “old body” and work through feelings about the changes There are many different ways to manage stress. If you’re feeling stressed, keep trying until you find the ones that work for you. Everybody handles stress differently so it is important to find your tools appropriately which fit in your toolbox.
Support groups are a safe place where you can connect with people who may be undergoing similar concerns or are also coping with a similar diagnosis. You can share your true feelings and fears in this space with people who will be able to empathize with you and offer you the support you need.
Staying active and doing activities which you enjoy is also important of course only to the extent that you desire and your physical health can manage. Walking, exercising, yoga, playing a sport, or any other physical and recreational movement.
Many people find solace in distracting themselves with creative outlets as it offers them a healthy release for their feelings and thoughts. You can try a creative activity such as painting, dancing, drawing, knitting, singing, sculpting, pottery, writing, or anything that you believe will allow you your freedom to express your innermost emotions.
Laughter is the best medicine. This is rightly applicable in your case as well. Laughing doesn’t mean that you are not concerned about yourself. Laughter releases chemicals in your brain which helps you feel better. So, watch a funny movie or show and laugh it all out.
Meditation and mindfulness exercises are helpful to relax and calm your mind and body even if it is for a short period of time. There are several apps which can help you practice these. Insight Timer and Headspace are some of the most reputed ones. Try to do this at least once a day for just five minutes and see if it works for you.
Sometimes getting a body and head massage can also help release tension and toxins from your body. Consult with your healthcare professional and seek guidance on how you can get a helpful, therapeutic massage.
Body image and self-esteem can be developed over time. It is not an impossible thing at all. Keep using affirmative self-talk and believe that you are confident and beautiful.
Stay strong and stay hopeful.
Hope this has been helpful. If you wish to ask any other query, please connect with us on chat from Monday through Saturday between 11am and 8pm or leave us an offline message.
