I think my cousin is anorexic but I thought only girls have eating disorders.

Question : My cousin’s parents had a divorce 6 months ago and since then he has become really skinny. He was always obsessed with going to the gym and eating less, but now I don’t think he eats at all – you can see his bones and ribs. He’s also really jumpy and restless. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to talk to him. Also, I thought anorexia only happens to girls. So I am really shocked to see this. What should I do?  Teentalker , 17-year-old

Thank you for writing in. Your cousin really seems to be struggling with his emotions. It’s a possibility he may have a concern that needs a check, as you mentioned ‘he was always obsessed with going to the gym and eating less’, so it looks like the situation with his parents may have been an emotionally trying time for him, and may have aggravated the problem. It can be a trigger. However, before we term it as a disorder there needs to be a thorough clinical evaluation, labeling a person would be incorrect! Being ‘jumpy and restless&rsqu.....
