I’m in a boarding school and feel homesick, alone and low.

Question: I recently joined a boarding school, it’s been 3 weeks and I feel really homesick and depressed. I hate the food and I miss home so much. Above all, I was the one who pestered my parents to put me in a boarding set-up. The first two weeks were exciting but now I feel low and unsettled. I’m unable to make new friends and feel alone. Dear Teentalker,

Being away from home can be challenging. I am not surprised you are feeling alone…you’re still in the early part which is by far the toughest stage of feeling homesick. Settling into a new place takes time. That initial excitement you felt tends to fade out after 2-4 weeks and then you start missing home.It is a very natural phenomenon.

Being a new boarder can feel overwhelming, considering the new environment, new people, new food etc. Feeling homesick is something like separation anxiety and may come in sudden bouts.
