Dear Teentalker,
Being away from home can be challenging. I am not surprised you are feeling alone…you’re still in the early part which is by far the toughest stage of feeling homesick. Settling into a new place takes time. That initial excitement you felt tends to fade out after 2-4 weeks and then you start missing home.It is a very natural phenomenon.

Being a new boarder can feel overwhelming, considering the new environment, new people, new food etc. Feeling homesick is something like separation anxiety and may come in sudden bouts.
Befriend newcomers in school and approach them, smile and introduce yourself. Chances are they are feeling the same way. You will find solace in knowing you are not alone and this feeling does not last too long. Diverting your attention by participating in school activities/sports or learning how to play a new instrument or being part of a band/ or joining any extracurricular activity of your interest will help you in the adjusting process.
Let’s look at the positive aspects of boarding school life experience.
- It makes you realize that you can manage things on your own which instills confidence.
- It makes you a stronger and more independent person.
- It also makes you value your family more.
- You develop more meaningful and long lasting friendships in the long run.
- Start writing letters to your family, siblings or cousins and soon you will look forward to the mail at the boarding school.
- Keep photographs or important small items from home which is a great way to remember your family. Keep another frame with the hope to fill it with a new fun memory.
Hang in there! It really does get better. If you still find it tough after a couple months, try approaching your school teacher or the school counsellor. They are equipped well to help you with more adjusting strategies.
