Dear Teentalker,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your innermost thoughts and most importantly, being very honest about it. Truly appreciate it! It appears as though your family is not very supportive of what you’re dealing with, since in their opinion, ‘mental illness is not a real illness’. This can hurt a lot and can be a very frustrating situation to be in.
While depression can basically feel like a fracture of the mind, where all one wants to do give up on everything in life, it doesn’t have to be that way. At this stage, what you really need is a safe space to express yourself and so I would like to share a few ways in which you can do so:
Whenever and wherever possible, find an empty chair and imagine the person sitting in the chair is the one with whom you have some unfinished business, then say out loud whatever you wish to.You can use the various tools from the toolbox to help you heal.
- Get access to nature. This can help in reducing your depression and the suicidal thoughts you’re having. Try visiting a zoo or playing with a friend’s or neighbour’s pet dog or cat. That can bring you a lot of happiness. Or you can also try watching funny animal videos online.
- Humour or jokes: Watching shows or content online or on TV for a bit can also give you some much needed relief.
- Make a list of things you have control over in life and those you have no control over in life. Start focusing on the things you have control over in your life.
- Set SMART goals, do it as follows:
- Goal: To achieve___________________________________
- S- Specific: What specific steps am I going to take in order to reach this goal?
- M-Measurable: How am I going to measure my performance to make sure if I’m on the right track.
- Achievable: Is this goal achievable? Yes?No? Why?
- R- Realistic: is this goal realistic given my situation? Why? Why not?
- T- Time frame: How much time, am I going to give myself in order to reach this goal?
- When you’re depressed, even doing a small task might seem huge. So during times such as these, it is important to focus on doing one thing, then praise yourself for doing so, then do the next thing, praise yourself and move forward with these minute steps.
Hope this helps, if you have any other query do connect online for chat between 11am-8pm or drop us an offline message.
