My parents are forcing me to do engineering but I want to become a chef!

Question: Cooking is my passion. Watching shows on TV, and videos on the Internet, I’ve learnt to create a variety of things, most of which turn out great. I really want to study to become a chef. But, my parents disagree. They believe that cooking is not a lucrative profession, least of all for boys. In school my science grades are good hence my parents and grandparents are forcing me to do engineering – the thought of which upsets me. How do I get them to believe me and let me do what I want?  Teentalker , 15-year-old

Dear Teentalker,

At an age where a lot of teens are confused about what they want to pursue, it’s refreshing to read your query as you seem to know the direction you’d like to steer your career path in. I can only imagine your dilemma when parents or grandparents are not aboard on the idea. You will surely need their support as culinary schools are expensive! (Having said that some of the best chefs never went to culinary school). But before you try to change their opinions, take a little time to know if you are passionate enough to make this into a career.
