Dear Teentalker,
At an age where a lot of teens are confused about what they want to pursue, it’s refreshing to read your query as you seem to know the direction you’d like to steer your career path in. I can only imagine your dilemma when parents or grandparents are not aboard on the idea. You will surely need their support as culinary schools are expensive! (Having said that some of the best chefs never went to culinary school). But before you try to change their opinions, take a little time to know if you are passionate enough to make this into a career.

- Volunteer as an Intern/Work for 6 months to a year in a good restaurant before you take your final decision – This will give you a feel of what being in the real kitchen involves. Initially the restaurant will ask you to do prep work, as in the kitchen you have to start from bottom and work your way up.
- Meet chefs and cooks, talk to them, they will be able to share experiences and will know the pros and cons of the industry.
- Research and List down culinary schools you wish to apply to. However, remember that does not guarantee you a ‘chef’’ title as your experience and skill after that is what matters.
- Give your parents more information on the subject once you have done your research.
- Make dishes for friends and family and get their feedback.
Your science grades are good, so let’s not negate that. Both the industries are competitive and you need a serious commitment and dedication to pursue either. So make sure you have explored your options there too.
Whatever decision you take, you need to own it. And ensure you do a thorough evaluation of all your options. If after your research and experience of 1 year on the job, you still feel as passionate, then I’d recommend you to bring in a trusted family member or relative who could intervene and help them understand your viewpoint. Formal training involves an investment so parental support definitely goes a long way.Follow your dreams yet don’t burn any bridges along the way.
Hope this helps, if you have any other query do connect online for chat between 11am-8pm or drop us an offline message.
