Dear Teetnalker,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns.
It is truly wonderful that you're aspiring to do so much in life and thinking about the way forward from now itself! Having a broad outlook towards life will surely take you places.
So, before you reach the levels of attaining awards like Padma Shree, Bharat Ratna, I would request you to delve and do some research in the field of mathematics as that will increase your chances of doing some pioneering work in the field. Most people who have won such awards were extremely passionate about what they were doing and so it is important for you to ask yourself if mathematics is something you're deeply passionate about.
To begin with, you might want to look at pursuing your PhD in mathematics either in India or overseas.
If you wish to do your PhD in Mathematics in India, then you might want to take a look at institutions like Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, University of Delhi, BITS Pilani to name a few. If pursuing your further studies abroad is what you're looking at, then completing your PhD in Mathematics from one of the best Universities in the USA might be a good option. Universities like Princeton, Harvard, MIT, Stanford to name a few offer courses in mathematics. Getting through any of these programs is a lot of hard work and effort. But it's well worth it and will be the beginning of your journey towards achieving those long-term goals. While getting your PhD from a reputed University will increase your chances of becoming a Professor, there is no guarantee of winning any awards and even if you do, it might take a REALLY LONG TIME before you get there.
So, here are three questions that I would request you to answer:
- What makes life worth living?
- What makes you extremely happy?
- What are you good at?
This will help you to understand what is your true calling (be it mathematics or something else) and will help you to navigate accordingly.
All the famous mathematicians we know of were extremely passionate about their work and dedicated their lives to it. The need to make an impact was extremely strong and came from within.

I know there's a lot I've been talking about 'being passionate about your work': so thought of letting you know that TeentalkIndia had the opportunity to shoot some videos with PadmaShri Rev.Fr. Joe Pereira, Founder, Kripa Foundation who has reformed many drug addicts in India and worked with the likes of Mother (now Saint) Theresa in the past. I would request you to go through his videos to get an idea of the passion and knowledge he demonstrates in the field of addiction. https://www.teentalkindia.com/video/explore/panelists/2
