Dear TeenTalker,
You’ve highlighted an issue that is becoming increasingly common, so thank you for speaking out about it. As you’re experiencing, cyberbullying is hard to ignore because of how public the attacks are – even though the fake profiles are obviously not you, you’re still being attacked.
Here are some points to begin with.
In Brief:
- Tell your network of online and offline friends how the attack unfolded
- Take a deep breath and tell your parents
- You are unique, you are worthy and you are strong – repeat after me!
Read on to understand how to do the above.
So the questions are: how do we help you do damage control and how do we stop the events from consuming your self-esteem and confidence?
Step one: get assertive. Post on your real page a brief explanation of the fake profile attack and how unexpected it was. Even though it seems obvious, the ripples are still being felt, so work on what you can control, and gain a sympathetic audience.
Step two: ask the friends you’ve already shared with to tell as many people as possible about the real situation so that you’re covering bases.
Step three: tell your parents. Sure, you might have to explain the nuances of cyberbullying to them and swallow your embarrassment, but once they’ve got the grasp that you’re being bullied, you can work as a group on tackling the situation. Just the feeling of being supported can help you feel less burdened.
Step four: I know it’s tempting to want to stay at home these days, but don’t let the bullies win! Group memory is short-lived, and don’t let it affect your concentration, your studies, your friendships – in a few months you’ll look back and feel proud of how you tackled this headfirst!
