Dear Teentalker,
How we see our bodies or as we call it “Body Image” becomes important to us as we go through puberty. As a young adolescent, it can make you self-critical as ‘the self’ is under constant evaluation. It is unhealthy to get your body to become thinner than what your body’s natural requirement or need is. Here are a few active ways to deal with this:

Dear Teentalker,
How we see our bodies or as we call it “Body Image” becomes important to us as we go through puberty. As a young adolescent, it can make you self-critical as ‘the self’ is under constant evaluation. It is unhealthy to get your body to become thinner than what your body’s natural requirement or need is. Here are a few active ways to deal with this:
- No one can force you to do something you are not ready to do. So stand up for what you believe in.
- Try to focus on your positive traits. When you focus on what you don’t have, it appears to be bigger than it actually is. Noticing your qualities will help you see things differently!
If being ‘skinny’ is the only criteria to be part of a friend’s group, maybe you need to reassess your friend circle. I know that group may be the popular and most talked at school but believe you me, it’s time to look within and ask, "Am I trying to just fit in and be someone I’m not because other people want me to be and look a certain way?”
Consider this: none of us have the same fingerprints, which means that each of us is unique, and come in different shapes and sizes. Much like how we have different strengths and weaknesses. Who we are as individuals, has less to do with the way we look and more to do with the way we think, feel and act. Skipping breakfast is an absolute No. It is unhealthy and will interfere with the body’s metabolism and capacity to burn fat. Rather, it will create more concerns as to begin the day you need to assure a good nutritious breakfast, so you have the required energy to kick start the day.
Being ‘skinny’ certainly isn’t a qualifying degree for anything in life. Look into the mirror and focus on your positive features, and also think about your positive traits which are not related to the way you look. I know, sometimes, we so badly want to be a part of something that makes us belong that we end up losing sight of ourselves.
So trying to fit into a group that requires you to change something about yourself as a criteria needs a rain check. Real friends will accept you just the way you are. Lastly, staying fit is more important than trying to fit in.
