Dear Teentalker,
I can sense how confusing this must be for you.,And, yes things will change. When we are going through this transitional phase, where there are not only hormonal and body changes happening but also a rollercoaster of emotions that you are riding, life can seem confusing!
Here are a few active ways to deal with this:
- Scan your positive features as this will help you see what makes you unique. You are more than your weight, size and shape.
- Keeping a thought log that will help you in identifying your underlying thought pattern will help you deal more effectively with the emotions you are experiencing.
You are developing your sense of identity, which highly influences your overall self-concept. It can be a very daunting experience and you may think no one gets it but you won’t believe the number of girls and boys who go through this silently. I thank you for reaching out and highlighting such an important aspect of being a teenager.
‘Hate’ is a strong word, and when you say you hate every part of your body, it makes me wonder if there isn’t a single aspect of your appearance that you like?I think you are being extremely hard on yourself. Just breathe! Close your eyes and scan what qualities you have that others may not, and what makes you unique. Usually, when we are self-critical, we only tend to notice the negatives.
I know adverts, magazines, social media have a huge impact on how we perceive ourselves, but instead find real people in your life who you admire, and note their traits that set them apart. Unfortunately, we cannot change how the media portrays the ideal woman, but we can change the way we perceive ourselves.
Let’s focus on:
- Food intake and its nutritional value- Make sure you are having all meals. A lot of times our diet is deficient which takes the form of acne, weight gain or weight loss.
- Drink lots of water as we need to flush out those toxins from our system.
- Get enough sleep so your body can repair itself and you wake up rejuvenated.
- Incorporate exercise: Go get some fresh air by going for a walk or a jog. Join a Zumba/dance, fitness class or maybe swimming which will help you tone your muscles.
- Stressing too much on that new pimple will assure another one comes up as the anticipated anxiety causes our skin to break out further. Acne is caused by a hormonal imbalance and can be treated by visiting a skin specialist who can rule out necessary concerns and help you.
- Try different styles and experiment with clothing and your hair, this is sure to perk you up: Unless you try, you’ll never know
If your appearance is still bothering you and it’s’ affecting how you feel about yourself, I’d like you to do some research on how photographers make models look the way they do. If you still have concerns, talk to a counsellor or a relative which will give you new and healthier ways to deal with this.
Be yourself! You can wear anything you want as clothes don’t define us but our attitude does. The change that you want to see in yourself will need a commitment from you to work on having a healthy lifestyle and a positive self-image. Getting fixated on how you look limits you and prevents you from seeing everything that is already beautiful in you. Beauty at surface level holds no value if internal work hasn’t been done. How you think about yourself also determines how you feel within. You need to feel gorgeous in order to look gorgeous and not the other way round. Working on your underlying thoughts and feelings will help you get there.
Hope this helps, if you have any other query do connect online for chat between 11am-8pm or drop us an offline message.
