My friend is addicted to drinking which causes us to have fights, how do I take care of him and myself?

Question : My childhood friend seems to be addicted to drinking at odd hours and as much as I care for him, I find myself giving into his demands , I’m unable to help him as he clearly doesn’t want to help himself and get into arguments with him frequently. He often takes money from me and now it’s just getting too much. How do I take care of myself while trying to help him with his problem? Teentalker , 18-year-old

Dear Teentalker,

Thank you for sharing your dilemma. When someone close to us goes through an addiction, one can feel extremely helpless especially when they don’t feel it’s a problem for them. I’m glad you asked this question about how to take care of yourself amidst this as it can have a drowning effect if you are not equipped with healthy coping.

When you say helping him, we need to define the help as there’s a slight difference in helping him stay away or helping him enable his addiction which would mean letting him have money to buy alcohol.....
