Dear Teentalker,
Thank you for sharing your concern. Being aware of the issue is a step of self-awareness and admitting it to someone is a big step and decision to make.
In order to understand better, I would like to know a little more about your situation. In your case, can you tell me how you began smoking? And when you say you are “very much” addicted, how much are you into smoking? How many do you smoke a day?
Addiction is caused due to various factors such as stress, anxiety or even starting with friends and initially smoking socially.

There are certain steps that can be taken to help reduce the addiction:
- Figure out what is it that makes you want to smoke a lot. Try and identify what happens just before the urge to put a cigarette in your mouth arises.
- Try and remember when this addiction started.
- Try and substitute. For instance, take a chewing gum or eat something else when you have the desire to smoke. Or what else do you think you can do?
Being addicted to cigarettes is similar to being addicted to other substances like alcohol and drugs. Addiction is not limited to these. There are also addictions like shopping, gambling, porn and many more.
You have to figure out what emotions go behind the cigarette smoking such as frustration, pleasure seeking or trying to deal with work pressure or personal life issues. After that you can try healthier alternatives in coping.
