Dear Teentalker,
Let’s begin by commending your parents for being open. In a world where some parents can be quite pushy, result-oriented and force you into a field you may not have any interest in, your parents are letting you follow your heart. I’ve been where you are when you say I feel anxious and directionless. The concern about the unknown can be scary. Dear Teentalker,

Stop. *Take a breath* You are not alone in this.
When our brain is under stress, we are unable to think productively and our decision making skills alongside problem solving ability gets hampered. Approach your parents and share your concerns about the feeling of helplessness and feeling lost and wanting their input and involvement.
The reason you are unable to focus on your studies is because of the unhelpful thoughts which have created anxiety for you. Anxiety is future related so it’s hard to focus on the here and now. Try grounding techniques to help you come back to the present moment. Also your priority currently needs to be your studies and then you take the other chunk post your 10th board exams and do the following
Navigating your career options
- Consider all your hobbies and interests and make a list
- List your strengths.
- List career options you may have in mind already even if it seems a blur
- Brainstorm with your parents to list qualities/personality traits that you have with career options that may fit you.
- Approach trusted teachers and take their input too
- Compile that list and start the process of zeroing in on possible fields.
- Approach a career counsellor to guide you into exploring other options
Embrace where you are and know confusion is part of the process and this awareness you have is your first stepping stone towards gaining clarity. Communicate your feelings to your parents and I’m sure they will support you through the journey.
