How to deal with a jealous friend

They say you should be flattered when people are jealous of you. Really?

You know you’re an amazing person, and you also know that others know how amazing you are, but what do you do when mere admiration crosses over the line into jealousy? There are many challenges we face in our relations friendships, especially in friendship. There are many challenges like betrayal, conflict, argument, and even jealousy. A jealous friend creates unnecessary drama and also negatively affects our lives. Jealousy can break even the strongest bonds of friendships and if you avoid acknowledging it, you might lose your friendship as well. However, addressing and getting over a friend’s jealousy can be difficult as it is veiled under layers of denial and hostility.

Let’s understand jealousy

You got excellent remarks from your teacher, or your romance has just begun, or you’ve attained the physique you wanted. Your first reaction will be to share it with people you love the most, especially your family and friends. And when you do that, instead of feeling happy for you, your any particular friend downplays your happiness and achievement and considers it something anyone can do. Consequently, your happiness turns into sorrow and you feel hurt and confused about their behaviour. That is jealousy.

How to deal with a jealous friend

Don’t ignore it

If you don’t pay attention to this matter, things will only get worse, as it will increase the jealousy and displeasure among you two.

Talk it out but gently

Honest communication fixes almost everything. Speak to your friend about how they feel and be patient to what they are saying. Don’t get upset or angry if they criticize you.

Be empathetic

Think about what they might be feeling towards you. How you would like to be confronted if they were you. Maybe you are getting too excited about your achievement and rubbing it in their face.

Give them some time

Once you’ve had a proper conversation with your friend, take a break and let it all get in your head one at a time. Give them some space and don’t push them into thinking good about you or change their perspective immediately.

Give them attention

Curing a jealous person requires plenty of time and attention. You have to surround them with positivity to get rid of the negativity. Remember that jealousy has its roots in low self-confidence and insecurity.

Decide if you still want to be friends

Dealing with a jealous friend can be difficult. And even after all the above-mentioned steps, your friend doesn’t seem to change, it’s time for you to move on as this friendship will turn into a toxic one.

Undeniably, jealousy is a human emotion too, but there are ways to deal with it. You just have to figure out how.

Dating violence or abuse is inexcusable and teenagers are more prone to it. First and foremost be strong, don’t be scared. Don’t stay quit or ignore it, rather act calmly & smartly.

In any relationship, respect and care are crucial pillars. Hence verbal or emotional abuse is unacceptable and inappropriate. And you should raise your voice against any abuse.

To Act upon something never means to become skeptical or always question relationship. Rather stay conscious and aware. As you might come up to any awkward experience on your first date or even when you are deeply in love with your partner.

Violence shows that your partner does not have self control and henceforth becomes violent. It's an uncontrolled reaction which is a result of provocation or lack of emotional control. Believe me, it’s always objectionable!

Sometimes abuse is not clearly as obvious as being hit, bulldozed or pawed. Rather your partner might be subtle while being abusive. In any such situation also it becomes really essential to be circumspect. Actually, this is psychological abuse which is also called mental or emotional abuse.

Always Humiliating or embarrassing You

If your partner has a constant habit of naging and intentionally put you down either in private or even publically? Comparisons are never good, and if something similar is a part of your relationship then you must think about it.

Using sarcastic and unpleasant tone of voice

In any relationship tone of voice plays a crucial role. If your partner always tries to make fun of you via sarcastic comments or has an unpleasant tone while speaking with you, then you must stop ignoring it !

Domination or control

Being in a relationship doesn’t mean giving control over your life or choices. So, if your partner keeps dominating and deciding what to do, when to do, why and why not, with whom with whom not of your life, and becomes angry on not doing as instructed. Then you shall take it into account and discuss it with your partner.

Use money to control

Some people have a strong feeling that money can buy anything. And unfortunately if you face any such traits of behaviours in your relationship, then just quit it. Yes, be safe and come over such relationship. It’s extremely important to value a person more than anything else.

Threatening to commit suicide if you leave.

A lot of people keep blackmailing their partners. Do not get scared of such activities, first of all and secondly act smartly without being emotional. As in any such situation, you are worst affected. In most cases after threatening you, your partner would come and behave extremely sober and normal as if nothing has ever happened. This doesn’t make everything forgettable and they can harm you or your pets also.

If any of your friends or siblings are into any abusive relationship and are facing such hardship or trauma, you must never hesitate to support them to come out of such relationships. Always stay confident and stand against abuse, as it's not your fault if someone doesn't know how to respect you. You can always openly seek professional help, if it’s needed to come out of any such relationship. And no looking back must be your agenda, once you have thought to move out of your abusive relationship. Don’t compromise with your self esteem in being good to others.

Everyone must always remember that in a relationship respect and acceptance comes before love.
